This 8-hour self-paced virtual course is intended to fulfill the theoretical component for the selection, insertion, and maintenance of adult Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters (PICCs).  

Objectives:

Upon completion of this course the participant will be able to:

  • Define infusion therapy and basic characteristics of intravenous fluids
  • Identify relevant peripheral and central venous anatomy and describe basic vessel structure and blood components
  • Define the categories and unique characteristics of vascular access devices
  • Determine the criteria for vascular access device selection indications/contraindications of each device
  • Illustrate the Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter insertion procedure
  • Point out possible intra-procedural complications and strategies to mitigate them
  • Discuss PICC care and maintenance
  • Describe post-procedural and post-procedural complications
  • Identify and explain the Standards of Practice
  • Discuss proper PICC documentation and policy
